Personal

I drew a comic yesterday. My first comic in about a year. My first extra personal comic, ever.

I know you can’t really read the text in the last panel (hey, I said in the first panel that I'm rusty). The last panel was on a separate sheet, and I didn't unify the width, for some reason, so I had to shrink it (the text was small to begin with, though). So here's what it says...

Things helping:
A sun lamp (happy light). Totally works! Whitechapel forum. I’ve made some true friends on Warren Ellis’s forum Whitechapel. And have some great fun too! Tossing and deleting photos and numbers that hurt to see (this includes social networks too). Making and keeping a daily calendar. Listening to podcasts while doing chores. Listening to Misfits while I’m crafting. Tea and meditation. Surprisingly. White [earl] grey with cream. Making this comic.
There are more things I wanted to include in this comic, but I decided to keep them out for use later. I liked making this comic, so I’m hoping to make more soon.

I made this only in pencil, very rough. I usually ink my comics. In future comics, I'll definitely ink.

I put this on my tumblr, as my 100th and final post until February, when I'm going to try to make most of my posts be My Art.

In the midst of clearing out my studio to prepare it for new projects, I dumped a LOT of old sketchbooks, but wanted to save a lot of the sketches, even if they were copies of others' art, or in another artist's style, or just doodles (I tossed the downright shit-tacular stuff, though). The result is three huge piles of sketches which I'm planning to make into videos. I've already made the first one, and the next was supposed to be done Sunday night, but, you know, the friend-fight happened. But I'm going to make the other two this week. The series is as follows:
1- random sketches
2- comics/concepts (roughs)
3- pet comic book project called "I Married James Hook" (this will be shorter, since most of the material is in writing, and that's just not that interesting in a video). I will write more about IMJH when I post that video.

From September through March, on the Audioshocker, I hosted an animation podcast alongside Nick (Audioshocker owner) and Justique (his amazing lady) called ANIMATIC ATTACK. It began with discussing a show we all fell for, The Legend of Korra (season 2), as well as an animated feature film (we even had a contest to win an advanced copy of Miyazaki's From Up on Poppy Hill. It also included a lot of incest. We coincidentally discussed incest in just about every episode (sometimes the actual subject, sometimes in passing).

Though this is my first time hosting a podcast, it's not my first time on the Audioshocker in general. I have guested on a few episodes of A Podcast With Ross and Nick, which later became A Podcast with Kaylie and Nick (on which I've also guested). Ross and Nick discussed episodes of the original X-Men animation, along with some random film, and Kaylie and Nick discussed episodes of ALF, as well as random films (most notably, though, the films of David DeCoteau, who makes porn and children's movies and awful stuff in between, all set in the same exact house. ALL of them).

Aside from Korra, we also watched From Up on Poppy Hill, La Leyenda de la Llorona, ParaNorman, Persepolis, Heman & Shera: the Secret of the Sword, and Jack et La Mécanique du Coeur. Other series watched were Welcome to the NKH, Koi Kaze, HammerMan, and The Critic (a surprising amount of incest in some of these).

What we do when we discuss shows and films is watch them a day or so beforehand, and take screencaps, which we share on our Tumblr accounts. I loved taking screencaps of Legend of Korra! Especially in the spirit world, the Wan episodes, and of Verrick and Eska!

I want to share my favourites, but I also want to share the links to the rest of the screencaps, because it's gonna be SO hard to just pick a few.

here we go! )

But alas, the Audioshocker is being put to rest, and so every podcast hosted will have their last hurrah by this weekend. Personally, I'm hoping for a couple of reunion episodes down the road.

You cannot kill self-made gods.

Gonna make this quick and dirty.

Made a [video] of my art. Gave a name for my machete (Khoshekh). Attended a gig starring my friend Sean's band ACK! (and made buttons for them). Got rid of a bunch of books (mostly young-adult). Marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade with the Roc City Hurlers (wasn't expecting to, so wasn't dressed the part). Saw the tail end of a Sisters of Murphy gig, which filled me with joy. Went to Lovin' Cup with friends a few times. Misadventures in bus-ticket-buying. Watched the series premiere of The 100, with forgettable results. Saw one of the scariest short films called [Lights Out]. Visited parents. Discovered a show called The Young Doctor's Notebook, which is fucking hilarious. Reconnected with my best friend. Went to NYC to see Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart. Met Stephane Berla! Tried my first macaron. Highly dismayed over the death of Dave Brockie (frontman for GWAR). Discovered 2048. Recorded my final [Animatic Attack] podcast on the Audioshocker. Finished watching Call the Midwife S3. Discovered the original Addams Family house is pastel pink. Got health care, dental, and eye care. Had to lay it down on my fam regarding posting bullshit without doing the research (re: Naked and Formaldehyde, which is actually vitamin goddamn B5). Bought a paid LiveJournal account for the better themes, no ads, and double the icons.

So I entered one of my favorite sculptures into a gallery exhibit at Rochester Contemporary. It opened on Thursday, and I talked about my piece for about 10 minutes today. I was really really nervous and I thought I was going to chicken out, so I didn't tell anybody about this exhibit for a really long time. Then I realized if I told more people, then I probably wouldn't be as nervous, or at least I wouldn't be as likely to chicken out. Everybody I told said they would show up. Only two people did. I felt kind of bad, but then again, I guess I don't really care anymore.
On the bright side, I did sell my piece! I don't know if I sold on the first day, which was a discount day, or if I sold it for full price yet. But I'm pretty excited, even though I know I'll never see my favorite sculpture again.

I might be the new Art Director for Cabbages and Kings literary magazine :D
I passed by their office yesterday and got called in by a couple people I had just recently met (one through Tony- my writing teacher, and another through my former comic book class). So I went in. I forgot that I said I'd probably pop into the meeting after I got out of my piano class (meeting is at 12, I get out at 12:30), but didn't get the chance. So there I was, in an awkward position of 'small-talk' zone, and I was handed the meeting notes and didn't get the chance to read through past the first line, which read "still need art director, someone who knows InDesign." I shouted, perhaps a little too gleefully, that I know InDesign, I love InDesign, and I have a degree in graphic design :D
They weren't sure if I was just saying that or not, but were totally pleased when I convinced them, and eagerly showed me the outline of the magazine, which I'll be laying out for print!
I'm totally excited that I'll finally get some use out of my degree, even if I won't be paid for it.

Since I've been ill (since the new year), I've kept myself busy by buying supplies from etsy.com and making Steampunk jewelry! And now that I've gotten the last of my supplies (that I've so far ordered), I'll be starting to make it Lolita compatible :)

I'm afraid my camera is no longer any good for taking photos of small things close up (even with the macro on), but here's most of what I've got so far:

Day 18
Um... I don't know what tickles my fancy right now. I had an idea of what to put here, but not anymore, so I'll just post this photo manipulation from a few years ago:
Through The Looking-Glass

Most people don't get it right off the bat, but it is a peculiar piece (the title is the give-away). Very photoshop'd ;) (of course, old fans of my journal will see it right off the bat and won't be fooled twice).

Day 19
Well, since I'm headed in that direction anyway, and am trying to whore myself off to a couple of friends in this area (right this minute, actually), I have to say, one of my talents is in Photoshop. I learned photoshop (and could actually teach it) years before I ever took a class for it. I particularly love doing photo manipulations and touch-ups :)

Couture

diello: (Emilie Autumn)
For Tora-Con, I have been making Steampunk and Lolita accessories. I have some mini top hats, some extra-mini top hats, a black/white/pink lolita bead crown, wrist cuffs, and a couple bows so far. And some buttons and stationery. I have 3 weeks to make more.

I am also having a lolita dress made for me by my friend Aliza, for the price of her booth fee, and she'll be helping me make a victorian outfit, too. Doubtful it will be in time for Voltaire, but I'm hoping she can at least guide me through when I finally get the pieces together (I have about half the pieces for the jacket, but may want to make a matching skirt).

I also plan to get some prints together, but I'm not sure which pieces to print as I've been terribly unsatisfied with my old work and don't think I have time for much new work, but we'll see. I do think I'll unearth my old manga sketches. They'll sell. It IS an anime convention, after all.

Lots of creating, lots of craft nights. I'm having a good time :)
And whatever doesn't sell will go up on my etsy shop.

Does everyone remember this picture of me from when I freshly lost my tooth?

Well, I put it up on Whitechapel's Draw Each Other thread the other day. I got a piratey pen sketch that was awesome (seen about page 5 or 6 of the thread), but this one by awesome illustrator Paul Sizer takes the cake:

He also added the caption:
"FEAR THE DIELLO!
She is fierce, and not afraid to lose a tooth in the pursuit of handing you your ass if you need it handed to you!
See her gap! See the speedlines! You know this will end badly... for YOU!"

I replied back:
Paul, I love you!! You are the most amazing guy ever! I LOVE the caption, too :D
Have my babies!

And then he replied:
See? THAT'S why I got into comic art!
Glad you dig it, thanks for putting up such a great picture...

Mask

I have no name for this mask like I did with Deathe Ledger. But maybe it doesn't need one.

This is made of paper clay. I sculpted it against the face of one of my mannequin heads. Then painted it accordingly.

+2 )

The tooth kept falling off, so I secured it with hot glue. It also has a crack in it (on the other side, not the face side) from too many people of different head sizes (including me) trying it on.

This design also came from the book that [livejournal.com profile] pax_athena gave to me <3<3<3!!

I found my camera, so I've got a few photos to show of one of my masks...

Everybody meet Deathe Ledger! )

His name is Deathe Ledger. You know, like Heath Ledger. Also deceased. I couldn't spell it Death Ledger, though, because then you'd all pronounce it "deth." The extra e at the end will hopefully ensure proper pronunciation.

How I did it:
Took a dollar-store skull, sliced it in half and carved it hollow. Crafted eyes out of lollipop sticks and votive candle tins. Crafted eyebrow, cheek and chin bones out of paper-clay. Then painted everything.

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] pax_athena for the inspiring book!!

diello: (shimotsuma)

You, [livejournal.com profile] pax_athena... you are AMAZING! I love you, girl! You have no idea how much I wish I could hug you right now!!

Let me tell you people about this wonderful person... she's awesome :)
She got me the one thing at the top of my birthday wish list:

It has everything I've ever wanted to learn, including how to make a lifecast, molds, beautiful masks, creepy elf ears, and even false teeth! I wish I had a scanner so I could share some of the gorgeous imagery with you.

Also she got me this gem:

I remember reading a couple of Chekhov's stories when I was 19 or 20... The Kiss is the only one that sticks out in my mind, but I can't remember it, so I am glad to have this collection!

THANK YOU SO MUCH VICTORIA!! You are the best!!!!!

Imagine FX is my favourite magazine because it deals in concept art for fantasy and sci-fi digital art, as well as concept art for general character and story development, and they have fantastic tips. They also have a Q&A section, which is the first thing I flip to upon getting the latest copy. It's my favourite section because they answer questions that a lot of people wouldn't think to ask but never knew they needed to know the answers. I pick up so many tips and secrets from this section.

Well, today, I got the latest issue (FINALLY! I've been waiting for it for, like, EVER), and I flipped to the Q&A section, and I see a side profile of an eye, and I thought, OH GOOD! Someone's going to show me how to draw eyes in profile! And I looked, and it was ME that asked the question!!!!

I almost forgot that I'd asked a few months ago how to draw eyes in profile, and I can't believe they published my question!!

YYYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!

For my next feat, I shall produce total radness from my computer, and have my ART published in an issue :)

Good luck
