I meant to post at the end of the weekend about my weekend. So here we go now..
Friday, I walked over to meet with Ron at Dogtown (our gourmet hotdog diner). He bought me a soda and they messed up my order by giving it to someone else. We ate outside, even though it was cold and threatening to rain.
Afterwards, we drove to the Rochester Museum and Science Center for an After Dark event called Carnival of Curiosities, where we were joined by my former college buddy Kendig. There were not many curiosities, and the only reason it was 21+ is because they had a cash bar on every floor. There were no faint-of-heart events, in fact, kids would have loved this thing. They had tight-rope-walking (which was an interactive display, and I loved walking the tight rope), twin 'singing' tesla coils (my other favourite), a snake lady, a sword swallower (one of 20 female sword swallowers in the world, and she lives right here in Rochester), a stilted man, hoopers, a fire display, and a bed-of-nails display.
But they kind of insinuated there'd be actual freaks/oddities there. I was excited to talk to some of them, but alas, no dice. RMSC is usually pretty good at getting super-cool stuff, so I was honestly hoping this would be a real freak show - world's smallest woman (Gloria Rodin - formerly world's smallest- who I met last summer, and she is an absolute delight), bug-eater (which I have been in my time as a side-show freak), human statue (which was my main job in the side-show), hell, even a fire-EATER, but...
But it was fun anyway. What we did get to see as the crowds thickened was fun. I got to see a few other friends who came. The doors opened at 7, and the whole event had sold out by 8:30, so good for me for getting advanced tickets ;)
Saturday, was pretty low-key for me. I went to my lady-writers group at Boulder Coffee, drank some wine and had espresso tiramisu, and I admitted to my writer's block and passed my notebook around for my group to scribble down some ideas. My two favourite ideas reminded me of the show Ugly Americans (corporate monsters/demons). Then we went dress-shopping to the rock-a-billy shop Hot Rod Bettie's... which was closed... again. It was getting late, so I had to high-tail it back home to prepare for movie night.
The Little Theatre in the East End had a special event showing of Jodorowsky's Dune. I knew I was going to enjoy it just by seeing the crazy art. Then the trailer for the documentary guaranteed I'd enjoy it, yet I was still BLOWN AWAY by how amazing the film is! If it's screening in your city, and you're interested in Moebius, HR Giger, and Chris Foss, definitely check this out!
Afterwards, the director of the documentary, Frank Pavich joined the theatre on screen over Skype video to answer questions. I had a good question in my head, but the person who introduced him asked 5 or so questions, the last of which was mine. That bitch.
Also, there is an illustration contest for Dune, due May 5th (SO LITTLE TIME), and I've got the awesomest idea in the universe! I gathered source material over the weekend and began sketches yesterday. Just 6 days to get it done and in...
Next on the agenda - going to see Neil Gaiman tonight in Syracuse O_O
