Supposedtobe
Mar. 6th, 2015 12:12 pmLast week, I'd neglected my violin due to being listless and trying to get other things done that needed doing between a few bad cases of the supposedtobes. I was supposed to be better this year. I was doing so well. Historically (personally), February's always been a very horrible month to live through, but this year nothing bad happened, except feeling lazy, and maybe feeling a sort of dread of bad things that may happen, and recalling bad things that did in previous years.
When I opened my violin late-midway through the week, I found that the A string had snapped off. Fuck. My first order of business was to let my tutor know I'd have to move the lesson back a day, so I had time to get a string, restring it, and then get a little practice in.
I'm not comfortable taking my violin out of the house in the winter, so I didn't bring it with when I bought the string at the only store open, across town (and so didn't get a pro to restring it). The cold is really bad for it, as the A string can attest. But my tutor taught me a couple of things I didn't really know about re-stringing before, so I gave it a try myself when I got home. Not only did the new A string snap when I wound it too tight, but the E string snapped too! Luckily, I had a spare E and replaced it just fine. But I decided to wait til I could bring it in somewhere to get the A replaced professionally at my favourite place, Sullivan's (which is so hard to get to while they're open).
I feared walking it from my job to Sullivan's because of the cold, but it's only an 8 minute walk, and it's been much warmer lately, and we didn't get that blizzard we were supposed to get, so yesterday, I brought the violin into work with me. And then upon leaving work, I saw only white. The blizzard had come a day late! But I had no choice. Onward, into the tundra! The string got fixed, I got to wander a little ways into the back of Sullivan's where they make and repair instruments (I've always been curious about the back), and I talked with Sullivan a bit about some winter-ready cases.
Yesterday afternoon, I'd emailed my tutor to request we skip this week, because I haven't gotten sufficient practice, and won't be able to pay anyway (string mistakes + paying bills & other expences set me back just enough to fall short), but I haven't heard back from her yet, and I'm starting to think I should email again.
Why did I let my studies slip!?!
