This morning, I was woken by a screaming charlie-horse (so named because of my immediate and constant screaming during the cramp). I get these once in a while, and it always happens the same. Before I'm even awake, I'm screaming in terror. More terror than pain, but there is SO much pain. Terror, because if I don't fix it immediately, I'm afraid it'll rip my muscle apart. I never know exactly what motion sets it off, but when it happens, my calf muscle spasms so ferociously that it starts to curl my whole leg, starting by pointing my toes, then bending the knee. Normally, I'm in a position where I can slide off the bed and plant my foot flat on the floor before the knee bends too much. Sometimes, I'm in an awkward position, and if it happens, I have to call upon Charles to grab my foot and pull it back, then SLOWLY straighten my leg. This has only happened twice: this morning, and once before. The first time, Charles had no idea what to do, and my directions didn't make sense to him, so my leg curled up pretty badly and damage was done to the muscle, which lasted almost a week. Last night, it lasted a long time - He knew to keep my leg straight, but still wasn't sure how to position my foot, so it kept cramping. We couldn't touch the calf either without horrible pain. I walked with a limp all day, but it's mostly fine when I rest. Walking doesn't hurt as much as is uncomfortable as hell - it feels like a weight is tugging at the muscle with every step. Stairs were a bitch.
At work, the servers and networks went down halfway through my shift: no calls, and no ability to help anyone at my desk (I was able to give directions to do it at home tomorrow, though). Then, for no reason, the fire drill went off for about two seconds. It scared me, because I would have had to walk down four flights of stairs, but apparently it was all part of the school's systems crashing down.
Came home, declared it no-pants o'clock, and put a hot, wet cloth over my calf while I snuggled up on my side with my book. Got up after a little while and felt horrid pain in my shoulder. I'd been on it wrong, apparently. Great. Attempted to practice my violin with decent success, but it still really hurt, and the pain's been getting worse all night.
Asked Charles to bring home Epsom salts, because Ron suggested it for sore bits a while back during Jazz Fest. Then found out Dr. Oz recently covered it, so Charles had to go to three stores to track some down. Thanks for making once-cheap goods newly expensive, Oz.
